Cause and Effect: Cheating

Cheating has become such a major problem in today's world. Cheating has become problematic due to the ability to achieve completion of the numerous goals one has set without exerting great effort. It is considered one of the most detrimental behaviors as it relates to people becoming flawed in the future. In this way, students do not have the ability to produce their own work, so throughout their lives they will find the easy way out of virtually every situation. "Students who believe that their options only consist of cheat or fail"("Product of Procrastination and Desperation"). As a student conforms to the normality of cheating, a cheat or fail attitude is adopted .There are many reasons why students cheat, but according to some researchers, there are three main reasons why students are likely to cheat: lack of effort, procrastination, and loss of creativity.

To begin with, cheating is likely to occur in students who lack motivation, study skills, or the ability to focus. For those students who lack in these skills, cheating becomes a great escape for them to essentially do just enough to get by. As these students cheat and take shortcuts to turn in assignments or reports, cheating only takes them to certain lengths. These lengths only extend to completing class work without putting in the effort, what happens when you have to take exams? Students have not absorbed the knowledge necessary to succeed to due cheating.

Secondly, students cheat not because they do not have the mental capacity or because they lack skills, but simply because the student procrastinates. The priorities in one's life veer away from school, priorities become more in the moment, they put assignments off to do other hobbies. The scholar's mindset begins to focus on activities, in which causes the assignment or activity for school becomes a lesser priority. When this becomes true, the student puts school work off until the very last moment. The same attitude is present when trying to complete the assignment, the scholar has put their work off until the very last moment, so they begin to compensate not losing time by copying work off the internet, out of books, or off of a peer's paper.

Moving onto the second effect of cheating, many students have a lack of self motivation and fall into procrastination. Once a student begins to cheat, holding one's self accountability begins to dissipate. "Computers cannot replace good teaching"(Moewe 2010). In this quote, Earl is exclaiming that cheating, breezing over notes, and losing that self-accountability cannot replace one's nature to truly educate themselves. Leading into life after school, a scholar may cheat their way through school and graduate with a degree, but in reality did one aggressively pursue the degree and master it? The answer is no.
