With large amount of data that a company has to process each day; the use of database management system, known as DBMS, is essential for daily operation. The database itself is not useful enough, however, users usually prefer to access data in an easier way. As a result, a database management system is a right tool, which is a program used to create, process, and administer a database (Kroenke, 2008, p.99).

As mentioned, using DBMS can make creating, processing, and administering a database a lot easier. People can modify, read, insert, or delete data with only a few actions. With the use of DBMS, companies no longer need to create several tables in different spreadsheet or other applications. Moreover, DBMS not only provide a simpler way to access database but also provide administration permission set up so that certain data can be limited to particular users. However, the disadvantages of using a DBMS include the high costs of hardware and software, users training, and also a problem known as "lost-update problem. (Kroenke, 2008, p.105)" The lost-update problem becomes severe as information error occurs when multiusers access the same data at the same time.

There are several license DBMS that are used for both companies and for personal use. Popular enterprise DBMS products include DB2 from IBM, SQL Server from Microsoft, and Oracle from the Oracle Corporation (Kroenke, 2008, p.105). On the other hand, the only remaining personal DMBS is called "Access" from Microsoft. The differences between a personal DBMS and an enterprise DBMS is that an enterprise DBMS product process large organizational and workgroup databases that support thousands of users and applications while a personal one is designed for simpler database application and fewer than 15 users (Kroenke, 2008, p.106).

Although there are several advantages that the use of DBMS can provide a company, it is also important for a company to realize its downsides and develop solutions to prevent problems. Moreover, just like other applications and systems, companies need to aware of any update availability of DBMS in order to protect its own database.
