New England and Chesapeake Region

The 1700's was a time for people's dreams and imaginations to able to run free in their heads and see the "New World" for all its possibilities. There were many reasons for people to look for refuge or wealth in the newly discovered world. Some wanted to escape from harsh laws and strict religions of the European government, and others went for glory and money. When the new colonies like Jamestown was formed, so was two new societies. Both areas were settled for different reasons. The different reasons led to distinctive social, political, economic, and cultural hardships and rewards. The New England colonies and the Chesapeake colonies are two examples that show different societies from the same region become completely different.

The settlers of the New England and Chesapeake region came from the same origin, Europe, but by 1700 their social, economical, and political differences led them in two different directions. The Chesapeake region included Virginia, Maryland, North and South Carolina, Georgia and Delaware. New England, north of the Chesapeake, included Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. People began to become accustomed to their regions and looked for ways to stay alive and gain from the geography they lived in.

Throughout Europe there were droughts, famines, religious changes and persecutions, over population, taxes, and wars. Also during that time there were explorations and traveling as well. When the people of Europe couldn't take it no more they set sail and went to the "New World". Up north in the New England colony, the motivation for colonization was to escaped religious persecution and set up a haven for people of their faith. The population was Puritans, which were English and White settlers. Pilgrims and the Puritan was the main people that inhabit the land. The New England colonies also wanted to be financially stable but the main reason was to be free from the Church of England. Now in the New England colony the Puritans were able to form the first democracy. Instead of having someone appointed to govern they had an election to appoint people to govern. The political characteristics included a governor, the General Court, and the town meeting which on consisted of selectman. They are very formal and very knitted people which were very close to each other and to their religion. They thought they were the perfect people and wanted everyone to follow them in life and in their religion. With that and there leader John Winthrop, they made the Massachusetts Bay Colony in which they called it a "City upon a Hill" for the whole world to see and duplicate(Doc A). The New England colonies were mainly families, instead of random Europeans, in which they stick closely together through better or for worse, and share whatever they have or can afforded (Doc B,D).
