When America entered World War I there were many citizens who were still speaking out against the government. People were criticizing the use of a draft, and also were directing negative comments toward the flag and military. The last thing President Woodrow Wilson wanted was to have rebellious acts toward the government during a time of much needed moral and positive energy.

In order to curb all the negative voices towards the government President Wilson formed the Sedition Act of 1918 which prohibited Americans to use disloyal language aimed at the United States government, flag , and armed forces during war.

The Act showed that the American government was extending their power too much. They were now controlling every citizen's opinions about war. Under the first amendment in the US Constitution it gives every individual the freedom of speech. Congress does not have the right to form a law that infringes upon the freedom of speech.

When World War I started the government tried to make sure that every citizen's opinions were geared in a positive direction. If the Sedition Act was never formed people would have had the freedom to say whatever they wanted. During a time of war it is important to have the whole country behind you, but the formation of the Sedition Act angered many people and took away the freedom of speech.During World War 1 the government extended their power showing how certain laws made by government can go against the constitution when they prohibited freedom of speech through the Sedition Act of 1918 after rebellious acts by the people.
