Their Eyes Were Watching God, written by Zora Neale Hurston is a story of Southern love. The main character Janie Crawford comes home from a long trip and tells her hometown bestfriend Pheoby the story of the last 20 years of her life. Janie starts her story with how she was raised by her grandmother who she referred to as Nanny. Janie's Nanny arranged for Janie to marry her 1st husband Logan Killicks when she saw Janie kissing a boy in the yard. Janie hoped that she would soon grow to love Logan but she didn't and soon decided to leave him for her 2nd husband. She ran off with her 2nd husband, Jody Starks, in hopes of a better chance of love and life. They moved to a town called Eatonville where Jody soon became mayor.

After Jody became mayor and started getting sick, Janie saw behaviors that she did not like in Jody. After Jody dies of kidney failure, a man named Tea Cake starts to hang around Janie. She falls in love with him and soon runs off with him to move to the Everglades. When a bad hurrican storm comes, they have to flee for their lives. In the storm, Tea Cake gets bit by a rabid dog to save Janie, which eventually cause him to become ill. During his illness, he tries to kill Janie, which forced Janie to shoot and kill the man she loved. She was put on trial, but was found innocent. Janie tells Pheoby the entire story but finishes by informing her that Tea Cake will always be with her.
