Corporate Social Responsibility:

According to Newton's third law, "Every action has got an equal and opposite reaction". Corporations are in the business of performing actions, whether they are in the service industry or manufacturing industry. The obvious effect of the corporation is to generate profit. The less obvious effect is how the society is getting affected. Corporate social responsibility addresses this concern. In a nutshell, Corporate Social Responsibility is the continuing commitment of the organization to behave ethically and contribute to the economic development of the workforce, their families and that of the local community and society at large.

Some of ways a corporation could be socially responsible would be

1. Follow the Rules and Regulations set by the government and may be go beyond the rules and regulations - Ex. Following the EPA (Environment Protection agency) standards.

2. Reduce the carbon footprint - Making the buildings energy efficient, conserving energy whenever possible.

3. Reinvesting in the community - Making contributions to charitable organizations within the community and also encouraging its employees to make contributions voluntarily.

4. Respecting human rights - The corporations should not employ children and must have reasonable work hours.

5. Diversity - As far as possible, keep the workplace diverse, by not discriminating against different types of people (color/religion etc.).

6. Acting ethically - Doing what is right and not just because it makes sense economically.

I would like to take Eaton Corporation and examine how they adhere to Corporate Social Responsibility. Eaton is a diversified power management company with sales of around 13.7 billion dollars.

Compliance - Eaton has a worldwide Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) governance structure of people, policies and processes, designed to ensure compliance, responsible EHS practices and proactive incident reporting and response. Eaton applies this structure to both their operations and products they make.

Environmental Stewardship - Eaton is committed to the environment and takes several actions intended to reduce the environment footprint through operations, products and supply chain. Eaton also reduces pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and conserves natural resources. Eaton also encourages its customers, suppliers and contractors to reduce the collective environmental footprint.

Community involvement - Eaton works with United Way to raise the quality of life for the region. Eaton regularly organizes Days of Caring event in which their employees commit a day to improving the community centers.
