Ethics Game Simulation

G-BioSport is an established company that sells health care supplements internationally. When they create supplements, they are not required to have prior approval with the Federal Drug Administration (FDA. Without this requirement, they simply place their products on the market. In one case, after test had been run, there was a contaminant found in 100% of the samples tested. The quality control manager must identify the problems associated with these findings and recommend solutions in order to save the company. This paper will define and defend decisions that were made in the simulation. Next, the relationship between concepts of virtue, values, and morals will be described. The author will provide examples how this simulation relates to the workplace.

Consumers have the right to know the risk they are taking when ingesting G-BioSport supplements. All consumers should be provided with equal information so they can make an educated and independent decision. Another issue is whether G-BioSport Company should sell a product that does not meet FDA safety requirements in a foreign market that does not have the same safety restrictions. The decision was made to apply FDA safety standard to all sales. Whether a customer is from Germany or New York is irrelevant. They are all valued and should be treated equally and not be exposed to any products that are contaminated.

Virtues such as honesty or generosity are not just a tendency to do what is honest or generous, nor is it to be helpfully specified as a "desirable" or "morally valuable" character trait. Values are the rules by which we make decisions about right and wrong, should and shouldn't, good and bad. Values are also people's beliefs. Morals have a greater social element to values and tend to have a very broad acceptance. Morals are far more about good and bad than other values. We judge others more strongly on morals than values.

In the simulation, virtues, values and morals all have a direct relationship to one another. In developing solutions for this scenario, all three had to be used. Using the virtue ethics, the Quality Control Manager had to ask himself "What kind of person will I become if I do this?" If the morally correct decision would not have been made, the Quality Control Manager would most likely quit working for the company. Customers should be treated the way you want to be treated, with respect and honesty. That is why the decision was made not to sell products overseas if it does not meet the US FDA requirements.
