Individual Reflection

The module Creativity, Innovation, and Design (CID) require us to create a film which I was skeptical originally as I am not a film student and had no experience making one. However, as time progresses, the importance of CID came clearer to me. It was not merely creating a film, but to challenge our creative thinking, work in groups, and be adaptive in areas which we are not familiar with.

CID is important for personal development and economic growth especially in the modern society where our life and work are constantly changing through technologies and globalization (Bornet, 2009). Volkov, 2015 reported that a team-based learning method allows the student to learn together with a deeper approach and improve their skills in collaboration and diversity. Therefore, making learning fun and increase their creativeness as different opinions come together.

I was given the role of an editor in my team who holds the importance of writing the final draft of the film (Scorses, 2017). I watched many videos on YouTube to draw inspiration and collated the effects which could enhance the story. I learned how to edit by watching YouTube videos. I spent a few days to familiarised myself with the software, FinalCut Pro, and experimented its tools.

The editor's creative power is to bring the story to life with the existing shots by removing flaws and enhancing performances (Paul, 1967). After the shoot, I realized that some of the scenes were missed and some were shot at the wrong time of the day. Instead of reshooting, I rearranged the flow of the film, played around with the current shots, and apply special effects to ensure that the storyline remains the same. Hence, using a creative approach to resolve the initial problem of incorrect scenes.

There were many challenges faced throughout the process but we managed to overcome them as a team. Tuckman, 1965 described the 4 stages of group development as forming, storming, norming and performing.

The formation of the group was relatively straightforward as the five of us were initially friends and invited Samson to our team. Having a new member in our team creates a diversity as we might have different views. We introduced ourselves, then voted the group leader, and assigned the following roles. We then exchange contacts and created a Whatsapp group chat to communicate after class.

However, during the storming stage, we realized that half of our team members have dominant personalities, and intragroup conflict arises as we expressed our true opinions (Tuckman, 1965). Different ideas started pouring into the Whatsapp group as we argued which story is better and which is more practical. In addition, it was harder to reach a conclusion as we were discussing on Whatsapp, which some of us may not reply simultaneously.

To overcome this, our leader decided to hold a meeting after class to discuss and finalize the story of our film. Offline interaction allows us to strengthen the bond and relationship among ourselves which motivates individuals to be more involved in the group and focus on the main content (Fulk, Schomitz and Steinfield, 1990), thereby reducing conflict.

During the discussion, major decisions such as the storyline and strategic intent of the film were made by group agreement. Once the story becomes clear, we each researched how to enhance the story through the perspective of our roles.

By the actual day of filming, everyone was familiar with their roles, were in the same direction and the internal conflict had been reduced. Although we faced some challenges such as poor weather and insufficient props, we were able to come up with a solution quickly as everyone in the team works together to resolve the issue. The efficiency and relationship among the team had grown significantly through sharing the same vision and effective communication. When the film is completed, we watched our video and agreed that the success of the film is only possible with the contribution of each member.
