Discuss the development of Napoleon’s character in Orwell’s fable: The Animal Farm.

     Napoleon plays an important role in the Animal Farm since he is one of the leading pigs after the death of Old Major. This essay will follow the development of his character throughout the novel.

     This character is a fictional character and the main antagonist in George Orwell's Animal Farm. He’s is described as "a large, rather fierce-looking Berkshire boar" who is "not much of a talker" and has "a reputation for getting his own way". While he is at first a common farm pig, he exiles Snowball, who is his rival for power. He then takes advantage of the animals' uprising against their masters to eventually become a tyrannical dictatorship at the farm.

    Napoleon never makes a single contribution to the revolution—not to the formulation of its ideology, not to the bloody struggle that it necessitates, not to the new society’s initial attempts to establish itself. He never shows interest in the strength of Animal Farm itself, only in the strength of his power over it. Thus, the only project he undertakes with enthusiasm is the training of a litter of puppies. He does not educate them for their own good or for the good of all, however, but rather for his own good: they become his own private army or secret police, a violent means by which he imposes his power on others. Napoleon's greatest crime, however, is his complete transformation into Jones.

    Although he is most directly modeled on the Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, Napoleon represents, in a more general sense, the political tyrants that have emerged throughout human history and with particular frequency during the twentieth century. Napoleon is a much harsher and stern master than the reader is led to believe Jones ever was. By the end of the novel, Napoleon is sleeping in Jones' bed, eating from Jones' plate, drinking alcohol, wearing a derby hat, walking on two legs, trading with humans.

    Napoleon, a pig with a strong personality but is not good in speech, at the beginning of the novel he always shows his goodness and persuade the readers that he is really perfect and faithful. But later, we discover that he is just a symbol of the dictator leaders who want to stay in their positions without making any effort and without giving any helping hand to their people. He also represents the leaders who know nothing about their nations and all what they care about is their own interests.

    Snowball, the second character, a strong pig with high skills in speech and a hard worker but his personality is not as strong as Napoleon's. He always does his best to develop the farm and he is a symbol of good leaders unlike his partner. He represents the leaders who have great minds and try to make everything works for their people. Improving the farm is his main aim despite all the obstacles and difficulties he is facing from napoleon. And this is exactly what happened these days in our real life as leaders are doing their best to make the life of their nations so hard and tough.
