Plot Summary of "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant

"the necklace tells a story of Madame Mathilde Loisel and her Husband. Mrs. Loisel has always dreamed of a life of luxury, with servants and a large house. Unfortunately for Mrs. Loisel, she is married to a minor clerk in the ministry of education, rather than rich and powerful man. Although Mr. Loisel is not well off financially, he still does all he can to see that his wife is happy. He cares deeply for her and wants her to have all she desires. So to try and make her feel better, he gets invitations to a party and gives her money to buy a dress.

They are invited to a party which turns Mrs. Loisel's world upside down. She gets the chance to get a taste of the high life but has nothing to wear. Her husband buys her a new dress and once she tries it on she realized that she needs jewels to make it better or she will just look ordinary. She borrows a necklace from her friend which gives her great responsibility and sets the scene for disaster. She goes on to the party where she is envied by everyone there. She gets so caught up in the evening that she loses the necklace she had borrowed. Mr. Loisel searches everywhere for the necklace and even puts out a reward but the necklace hoping the necklace will be found. He tells his wife to tell his friend that they are getting it fixed to save time. The necklace never shows up and is never found. He then borrows and begs all the money he can get to buy another necklace to replace the other one. They search jewlry store to jewelry store looking for the makers of the necklace and they only find the maker iof the box. Finally they find a necklace that greatly resembles the other one. Mr. and Mrs. Loisel resort to a life of poverty to repay the money back which is more worse off then before. Ten years later once all the debts are paid back, Mrs. Loisel runs into her friend from which she borrowed the necklace. Her friend still looks young and beautiful rather then Mrs. Loisel. At first the friend didn't recognize her because she had aged so much and looked nothing like the person she did before. Mrs. Loisel told her friend about losing the necklace and what they had to do to pay for it, and her friend tells her that the necklace was fake. So in the end Mrs. Loisel had went from having a decent life, to a life of poverty and despair. So if she would have been happy with the way her life was rather then wanting more all the time, she would have never had to experience hardships.
