The memorization method is the most common approach in the learning process. Two types of memorization are rote learning and practice rehearsals which are done by reading textbooks and writing compositions. The communication method includes listening and oral reading. These are sample study skills that have been recently developed. Studies on the learning process have evolved over time with the end in view that the evolution of learning fits with the needs of contemporary times. More learning techniques have been developed.

The inherent weakness in rote learning is the passive action involved as in mere reading and listening without analysis. A reader or listener needs to practice critical thinking to exercise the mind through question and answer and appreciation of facts during lectures. The latter is known as PQRST technique - an acronym for Preview, Question, Read, Summary, and Test which focuses on key information and is especially used during final exams. The technique prioritizes the processing of information and its direct relation to exam questions.

A Preview causes a student to glance over the major points of the materials. He then formulates a Question about the major points. He is asked to Read related topics in relation to the question interposed. A brief and concise Summary of the topic is thereafter made to compress all materials used.

The student finally undergoes a Test to answer questions. The foregoing techniques are good examples of how to study.

Peer communication is shown to be effective in improving study habits. It uses cue training, keyword processing, visual imagery, and mnemonics facilitating the entire study process. Study habits are reinforced by using the time effectively and the conduciveness of the location. Thinking skills can be enhanced by the SQ3R method - Survey, Question, Read, Recite and Review. In brief, thinking revolves around the main idea in reading and extracting important details.

The following are good study tips: have a consistent wide-spaced study area; prepare everything beforehand; begin studying 30-90 minutes after meal and study no more than 30-40 minutes per hour; take study breaks outside of the study area; pay attention to the outline and table of contents; and use the "memory dump" for essay exams. Memory dump requires the writing down of everything before writing the essay. The important thing is the willingness to improve the study habit and do well in school since responsibility solely rests on the student by taking extra effort and sacrifice.
