Selfless-Love

The story The Gift of the Mag 2 written by William Sidney Porter (1862-1910) was written in third person view. Third person point of view occurs when the speaker is not the participant in the story (Clugston, R. W. 2010). The point of view was consistent thought out the story from the same perspective. The narrator describes the characters situation and actions in detail. The narrator explains the couple Della's and Jim's living condition to give us an image of the setting. The setting is where the story takes s place. The author was very detailed when explaining the plot. The plot tells you what happens in the story, but the theme tells you what the story is about (Clugston, R. W. 2010).

In the beginning of the story, the narrator explains how Della's felt being pressured because she was unprepared for Christmas. The author was very descriptive in describing Jim and Della's relationship. He shares how Della mentally struggled in regards to her decision making and fears about what she has done. He shows the self-less love Della and Jim have for one another.

The theme was surrounded by love. The narrator shows their self-less love by disclosing items that are symbolic to them and how they sold those items to buy each other a Christmas gift. Symbol is something that has a literal identity but also stands for something (Clugston, R. W. 2010). The husband's symbol was his watch. In the early age and even in today's age, a man's watch is his repletion. It gives him a feeling of gratification. As stated in the story "Two possessions of the James Dillingham Young in which they both took a mighty pride. One was Jim's gold watch that had been his father's and his grandfather's (Clugston, R. W. 2010)." The

Wife's symbol was her long hair. Women adore their hair, it defines us. She nourishes her hair, that's why it's so long. Her hair brings her happiness and joy, its life to her.

The author uses these symbols to give the reader a better understanding of how each character cultivate to the symbols. The author does this so the reader can get a better understanding of the value of each symbol because they sell it to buy each other a gift. By doing this they express their love for one another. When Jim drew a package from his over coat pocket and threw it upon the table, Della was surprised. It was the combs she longer for in a Broadway window. They were expensive combs, she knew, and her heart had simply craved and yearned over them without the least hope of possession. And now, they were hers, but the tresses that should have adorned the coveted adornments were gone (Clugston, R. W. 2010). The combs are used as a cultural symbol of wealth and high social status.
