What do you notice about the following in the conversation between Davies & Aston:

1. Their use of adjacency pairs (including questions & answers)

2. Topic shifting

3. Pauses

I think adjacency pair between Aston and Davies is quite strange because there aren't many examples of proper question and answer and turn taking. It seems like Davies kept the conversation going as he speaks the most, asks most questions and frequently uses tag question in his speech (when he come at me tonight I told him. Didn't I? You heard me tell him, didn't you?). Aston's answers are mostly in single word or short sentences, for example; Aston: Yes...would be...Mmnn...Ah. This shows that he's not properly engage in conversation with Aston or don't like to talk much. This also suggests that something might be going through his mind for which he is unable to concentrate.

Davies shifts the topic (Davies: I been left for dead more than once. Pause. I noticed that there was someone was living in the house...Aston: Yes, I was pleased when I got hold of this one (Buddha) It's very well made. Davies: This the bed here, isn't it?). This also emphasise that Davies wants to control the conversation for the sake of talking and that he might want to build a relation Aston.

There are a lot of pauses after Aston's speech which shows that he is a quite person or hesitant in communicating with Davies as they are only strangers. The pauses conveys silence between the speakers, however, Davies prompts to continue the conversation.
