Two Great Women

Many significant women stood out as an inspiration to other fellow woman for their notable deeds. Queen Lydia Lili'uokalani and Dr. Susan LaFlesche Picotte dedicated their lives to defend and help their people. Queen Lydia Lili'uokalani is the last queen for Hawaii who fought to keep Hawaii's independence. Dr. Susan LaFlesche Picotte looked after Omaha people, her tribe as the first and only doctor who cared for Native Americans. Both Queen Lili'uokalani and Dr. LaFlesche stood up for their people and are well educated however, not both women achieved what they hoped for.

One obvious difference between Queen Lili'uokalani and Dr. LaFlesche is the outcome of their actions. Queen Lili'uokalani did not accomplish her goal to sustain Hawaii's freedom. The queen hoped to make Hawaiians regain authority of their land after the Americans take over. She attempted to write a new law but it deemed to disappointment. Queen Lili'uokalani braced the rebellion of her people after she gave up her chair but then again that lead to her arrest in her fort. On the other hand, Dr. LaFlesche succeeded in obtaining a medical degree that helped her to care for all the Omaha people. Although Dr. LaFlesche had struggled to reach 1,300 Omaha people around the estate, she succeeded again to reach them all riding a mount.

In spite of this difference, these women have many things in common. The most important similarity is the devotion they shared to their societies. Queen Lili'uokalani kept fighting for Hawaii's freedom. Later in her famous book she explained her attempts to save the country and its customs. She continues to be the hope of Hawaiian nation from her song "Aloha Oe". Like Queen Lili'uokalani, Dr. LaFlesche gladly gave up all her life in nursing the Omaha folks. She spent her early years studying at Women's health academy, and her last years helping almost all the Omaha folks.

Another Similarity between Queen Lili'uokalani and Dr.LaFlesche is high level education they both acquired. Queen Lili'uokalani was offered a good education at a young age in the finest institutes. She also learnt from her journeys to other countries. Similarly, Dr. LaFlesche was the first in the tribe to join community school at a young age. Later on, Dr. LaFlesche encountered a doctor who rejected to help an Omaha patient which led to the patient's death. This tragic incident made Dr. LaFlesche decide to study medicine to care for the Native Americans.

Although Queen Lydia Lili'uokalani did not have a positive outcome like Dr. Susan LaFlesche Picotte, she was fairly similar to Dr. LaFlesche in many ways. For example, they both loved their societies and cared for them. They also built a good base of knowledge and experiences. Both women are remarkable because they stood to what they believed in.
