UNITED STATES HISTORY

Great things don't happen in a blink of an eye; it takes time, effort, understanding to accomplish it. An example of that would be how our great country, America came about. Although people of British origin largely settled the regions of America during the 1700's, it didn't mean that all of those who left England had the same motives when they first arrived to the new world, and this caused major differences in the development between regions.

Even if most of the new settlers in America came form England they settled in different regions depending upon their motives to settle in the New World. The two regions in particular were New England, and the Chesapeake region. The people who mainly resided in New England were referred to as the Puritans. They mainly sought religious freedom from England, and were religious people but did not agree to the teachings of the Church of England. This showed that their religion was mainly based on the Church of England, and still had strong ties with England. Young men mostly came to Chesapeake for the riches. There was no talk, but dig gold, wash gold, refine gold, load gold (Doc F). So family life wasn't a major priority in this region.

By the 1700's there were major differences in the population of these two areas. New England's populations consisted of mainly whites. Settlers in New England were Puritans, Quakers, Catholics, all spread out through out the area; it was like a melting pot. However on the other hand, in the Chesapeake region majority of the population were black slaves. The difference in population was also caused because of the difference in their economies. New England's economy was mostly based on fishing, shipbuilding, and farming, while the Chesapeake region had large tobacco plantations, which required a lot slaves in order to maintain them.

All of this caused a contrast in the development of these two regions. The New England was more religion, and family based rather than focusing on economic gain like that of the Chesapeake region. Both
