Experiment Proposal

The nature of gravity and its effect on Earth, which has been discussed thoroughly in lecture, is a fascinating occurrence in our universe. The question of whether or not a falling coin, given the rate at which an object falls due to gravity, could become a hazard to anything upon impact arose during a friendly discussion and quickly became scientific inspiration. The purpose of this experiment is to determine at which height a U.S. quarter would bust a water balloon. The motivation for this experiment comes from not only past discussions of the possible force of a falling coin and its possible damaging results, but also countless MythBusters reruns as well.

The nature of this test revolve around the use of water balloons, all of which will rest at ground level and contain the same amount of water, and a U.S. quarter, which will be dropped from several varying heights until achieving the appropriate distance for the desired results. Ranging from mere inches to several feet above the stationary balloon, the coin's potential for becoming hazardous due to its height, speed, and rate of fall will be observed, collected, and examined.
