Social Networking

Facebook, Twitter: these are just a couple names of the most popular social networking sites. In the past decade, the way people receive mail has drastically changed. The use of social networking has also risen as well. In the past few years there has been many lawsuits for the owners of these social networking sites. The use of social networking has some people worried due to their privacy laws, suggesting that people feel their privacy right is being taken away by agreeing to the terms and conditions.

When agreeing to the terms and conditions that come with the creation of a social media account, one is giving up more than they think. If someone is not careful with what they put on the internet it can cause drama and lead to potential job loss. "Tweeting , Facebooking , and blogging are easy ways to communicate and are becoming nearly ubiquitous in this age of portable computing, but for some hospital staff, they are becoming taboo activities"(Howell). In hospitals, some patients are worried about their personal business is being put out too much. In 2010 the university of North Carolina Health Care system blocked network computers from Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace after a breach that left patient records vulnerable(Howell). If someone really wants to know what they are signing up for and all the clauses that come with a social media account then one should read the terms and conditions before clicking on "I Agree".

Due to recent changes to Facebook, it left some people pages who were once private now open to the public. This lead to many lawsuits for Mr. Mark Zukerberg. In 2011 the FTC announced that it had a draft settlement with Facebook over allegations that it had mislead people about its' use of their personal data.(Sorry). Some users feel that they do not have a say in who can see what they post online. "Announcing the agreement, the FTC said it had found a number of cases had made claims that were unfair and deceptive, and violated federal law."(Sorry). Users felt betrayed and there is now trust issues between them and Mark. The details of the settlement show that Facebook betrayed its users trust. By Mark changing the rules of Facebook, peoples pages are now more vulnerable than ever.

Although someone should not always worry about creating a social media account. Just like anything else, it has its pros and cons. "Social networking sites allow people to create new relationships and reconnect people with friends and family."(Social) Social networking allows people to keep in touch with distant relatives. As one should know with the pros there is always a con. Social networking sites have no way to verify that people are who they claim to be, leaving people vulnerable to solicitations from online predators who are able to hide their identities. (Social).
