Nature vs. Nurture

In my future, I want to be psychiatrists, and I believe Nature vs. Nurture is a great impact on my field. I want to work with people who are mentally handicapped and figure out why they act the way they act. A lot of them are real mean for no reason, but what I have learned about them is they love attention, and music is their heart. In order for me to break this theory down, we have to take a look at both aspects.

Nature is the environment, your surroundings. Nurture is your development, who nurtured you. What is "Nature vs. Nurture?" "Nature versus nurture" is a psychology term related to whether heredity or the environment most impacts human psychological development (behavior, habits, intelligence, personality, sexuality, aggressive tendencies, and so on) (about.com2010).

Upon reading Psychology: Themes & Variations (2009) Psychology is the science that studies behavior and the physiological and cognitive processes that underlie it, and the profession that applies the accumulated knowledge of this science to practical problems. Mental Retardation is a generalized disorder, characterized by significantly impaired cognitive functioning and deficits in two or more adaptive behaviors with onset before the age of 18. Most handicaps are diagnosed with Down syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome and Fragile X syndrome (New York Times, 2010). Most of them just want to be loved, and because so many people cannot deal with them, that affects them. A lot of them are scared, if u walk up to some of them they think you are going to hit them, and that is not the case. That is where Nature comes in to play, it there environment. Depending on your environment, it will make them the individual that they are. By working with mentally handicaps, I have observed several things. First, the ones where their families are actively involved, there is a good chance they become more productive in society and are somewhat more independent. The ones that don't deal with their family or friends are grumpy and mean.

Now we will focus on the importance of nurturing on mentally handicaps. Nurture is your development, who nurtured you. Nurturing has to do with the importance of the environment; some feel that with out the correct support of the environment success is limited.
