When extracting DNA from strawberries, there are several ingredients that can be used. First of all, usually there will be a soap that serves to break down the cell membranes. The cell membranes have lipid bilayer components and the soap acts to dissolve the membranes. In addition, sodium chloride is a common ingredient used when extracting DNA from strawberries because the sodium chloride works to break apart proteins that surround the DNA. Also, the sodium chloride works to keep the proteins dissolved so the proteins do not separate out with the DNA. 'Table salt' found in most households is a common name for sodium chloride. For our uses, we will use non-iodized table salt instead of table salt that has iodide added. In addition, when extracting DNA from strawberries isopropyl alcohol is used because it causes the DNA to precipitate so that the DNA is viewable.

We will be isolating DNA from strawberries in this experiment because strawberries have a viewable amount of DNA with eight copies of each chromosome. In addition, strawberries have enzymes that help break apart cell walls, these enzymes are called pectinases and cellulases.
