High School Start Time

Beep! Beep! Beep! The school start time is too early. School districts need to understand young adolescents need more rest in order to succeed in school. A high school student needs at least eight to nine hours of sleep. Most high schools begin at 7:30 AM. Twenty percent of teenagers fall asleep in class (www.npr.org). For these reasons, the high school start time needs to be changed.

Some high school districts changed there start time from 7:20 to 8:40 that gave the students an extra hour and twenty minutes in the morning. Most students don't get enough sleep before school. Most students fall asleep around 10:00 to 11:00. Most students wake up at 5:00 or 4:00 AM to prepare for school. If students could get more sleep they could probably pay attention in class (www.npr.org).

Going to bed late is not the faults of teenagers. There are sleep patterns for different ages. A regular teenager will fall asleep around 11:00PM and the student will be tired until 8:00 AM. If teenagers got more sleep the student probably would participate more in class and excel. If students had more sleep they would most likely listen to the lesson (www.sleepfoundation.org).

High school students who think they have academic problems and have C's or lower have less sleep. The student might have a late bed time or has a hard time sleeping at night. Students with higher grades tend to have more sleep and less stress on them. Tired students tend to have Vicente 2 short-term memory and negative moods. If the student doesn't get enough sleep he might be less productive.

Some students use beverages with caffeine in it to wake up. These unhealthy beverages can cause the student to concentrate or headaches. The long-term effects can cause your growth and can increase the risk of having cancer. Caffeine affects a human's health (www.mckinley.illinois.edu). So if we had later staring times the student wouldn't need an unhealthy beverage to keep them awake.
