By their 19th birthday, seven in 10 teens of both sexes have had sex. Sex ed gives teenagers information on how to at least be safe if they are having pre-marital sex. Sex education is also about developing young people's skills so that they make informed choices about their behavior, and feel confident about acting on these choices. Every young person has a right to sex education. It gives them a means by which they are helped to protect themselves against abuse, exploitation, unintended pregnancies, and sexually transmitted diseases.

Going to sex ed helps to aim at reducing the risks of potentially negative outcomes of sexual intercourse. Such as unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. It also contributes to young people's positive experience of their sexuality by enhancing the level of their relationships and their ability to make informed decisions over their lifetime. If we are giving young people sex education it dshould be effective. It needs to include oppurtunites for young people to develop skills.

The skills teenagers develop as a part of sex education are linked to more general life-skills. Being able to communicate, listen, negotiate with others, ask people for advice, are very useful life-skills which can be applied to sexual relationships. Other important skills include being able to recognize pressures from other people and how to resist them. Sex education also helps equipt young people with the skills to be able to figure out the difference between accurate and inaccurate information.

Teenagers can be exposed to a wide range of attitudes and beliefs in relation to sex and sexuality. Sometimes it may be contradictory and confusing. Teenagers are welcome to discussing issues where people have strong views like abortion, sex before marriage, lesbian and gay issues and contraception, and birth control. People providing sex education obviously have their own attitudes and beliefs about different issues, but it is important not to let those opionions negitively effect the sex educatuin they provide. Sex education also provides young people with an oppurtunity to explore the reasons why people have sex, and to think about how it involves emotions, respect for one self and other people and their feelings, decisons and bodies.

Teenagers get information about sex and sexuality from a wide range of sources including each other, through media, including advertising, televison and magazines, as well as books and websites which are intended to be sources of information about sex and sexuality. Of course sex education that starts early, before young people reach puberty, and before they develop established patterns of behavior. It is important for sex education to begin at a young age so that it can be sustained. Overall giving young people basic information from a early age provides the foundation on which more complex knowledge is built up over time
