"A Woman's Place"

Author: Naomi Wolf

Review:

Wolf's major claim- young women should use the "survival kit", which is for life lessons, rules or guidelines to follow. And, her idea of a true woman is a strong woman who knows what she wants from life.

The purpose is to let women learn how to speak out and voice own opinion. If they want to become a true woman, they should not dependent upon others. They ought to know that they are equal to men.

The rhetorical strategies used are process analysis, illustration, and demonstration of four factors of knowledge for women to remedy.

1) Becoming a woman- you are already woman.

2) Money-you should have your own income.

3) Never cook for or sleep with anyone who puts you down.

4) Become a "goddesses of disobedience"; questioning them

Supporting points/ evidence: A Woman's Place which is the name of the commencement speech given by Naomi Wolf at the Scripps College graduation in 1992.

Personal Response: I really enjoyed this essay. Some parts were really interesting, and I could relate to them right away, like the part Wolf tried to say a woman needed to redefine herself in order to have a place to start. In fact, she could figure out what she wanted to be and where she wanted to go. I remember when I was twenty one years old, my mother told me that I should not marry to a man whom I had become totally dependent on. She asked, "What would happen if one day my husband filed for divorce?" Therefore, I should have my own income. I need know about money and know how to manage it.
