I had a difficult time trying to find any adaptations from this book. Because of that, I simply decided to compare and contrast the adaptation of A Raisin In the Sun from the book to the movie.

In reality, the adaptation was quite good. The plot of the movie held fast to the plot of a book, however, it still wasn’t close enough to the book for my taste.

The actors in the movie were not well cast. Benetha and Asagai looked nothing like college students, To me a college student is around the age of 20, and yet Asagai is seems so much older, with an old and scratchy voice. Another person who is not well cast is Travis. He always seems so happy and in those days a kid at the time would not be too thrilled with his life because of the racism during that time.

Another thing I was not completely satisfied with was the scenery, according to the book, roaches and rats dominated the new house, but in the movie the house actually appeared very clean. Also in the book it was said that they had to clean the house before they got any visitors, however the movie left out several cleaning scenes, like the one where Travis used roach spray to help with the roach infestation.

Another thing I disagreed with was the movies own additions. Because it gives more detail to the movie, and, on a small level, takes away from the book. For instance the movie shows Walter drinking, while in the book it shows him leave and come back. Which lets the reader teach themselves what is going on while he is gone. They also show the name of, and what the bar looks like.

Overall, there were some parts that the movie captured what the book was saying, however, there were parts that were simply not put together well. In my opinion, the movie could have made more of an effort to more accurately capture the true meaning of the book.
