The focus of this paper is to show the raising and countering of objections pertaining to the attaining of a Master's degree in Business Administration (hereunto referred to as an MBA) and how these factoring assessments aided this writer make the decision to further her education by beginning her journey to an MBA. Additionally, the writer of this paper will give support to her point of view by including documented examples from not only the department of labor statistics but current article on the impact of education as well as supporting information regarding graduate education's impact on earnings, concluding with a review of the salient points.
Why an MBA
While there are several reasons one would want to get an MBA there are just as many reasons not to. That being said, this section will show the most common reasons to attain an MBA as well as, why one would decide against such a degree. The first reason one would want to get an MBA is they are looking to advance his or her career. While it is possible for one to rise in the corporate ranks without an MBA, there are instances that hard work and ingenuity alone may not be enough. Some of these careers include banking, finance, and consultancy. What's more, there are companies who refuse to promote their employees that do not further their education; nevertheless, having an MBA is by no means a guarantee of future advancement or even getting that desired job. Another reason one would choose to get an MBA may be because he or she wants to change careers, or he or she is thinking of assuming a role of leadership in their current field.
Before making a decision to attain a degree it is important to look at the situation from all angles so as to not jump in blindly. One method of doing this would be to do some research and one good place to look would be to the Bureau of Labor Statistic. Looking to the Bureau of labor Statistics would give the perspective new student some idea as to how both the state and regional unemployment and employment summary looks. This is important were as to know if the unemployment rates are up or down, and if furthering one's education would increase their ability to attain a job within his or her chosen field of study.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2012) newest economic release dated May 18, 2012
Regional and state unemployment rates were little changed in April. Thirty-seven
states and the District of Columbia recorded unemployment rate decreases, five
states posted rate increases, and eight states had no change, the U.S. Bureau of
Labor Statistics reported today. Forty-eight states and the District of Columbia
registered unemployment rate decreases from a year earlier, while only one state
experienced an increase and one had no change. The national jobless rate was little
changed from March at 8.1 percent but was 0.9 percentage point lower than in April
2011.
