Leadership Questions

My personal views of leadership are derived from experience as an Assistant Director of Nursing and from following the leadership of other nurse managers. I believe leadership is both inherited and a learned skill. Behavioral theories state "leadership is derived from personal experiences, education, and training" (Sullivan & Decker, 2009). Personality and behavioral theory traits play a role in how information is processed and decisions are made. Inherited and learned behaviors determine leadership style and abilities to effectively persuade others. All individuals have the ability to become great leaders. Leadership in an organization is an important function in daily operations. Good leadership skills can enhance existing operations, increase revenue, and carry out a company's mission.

Although many believe leadership and management are synonymous, they are very different from each other. Management has the responsibility of day to day operations such as organizing, planning, implementing, and coordinating. A leader creates and inspires others to follow his vision. A leader is a mentor for the manager. Leaders are typically considered Chief Executive Officers, Chief Operating Officers, Chief Financial Officers, Presidents and Directors of organizations. Managers are supervisors, vice presidents, and delegates of authority with responsibility ("What is the Difference Between Management and Leadership?," n.d.).

Characteristics of an effective leader are integrity, direct communication, and ability to demonstrate professional and moral behavior. A leader must know the employees of an organization and be able to recognize their strengths and weaknesses. Leaders that empower and provide resources, allow employees the autonomy to produce quality work. A leader's ability to eradicate disruptive and inappropriate behaviors is essential in maintaining a productive work force. By minimizing chaos and conflict, the focus remains on primary aspects of business. A manager should have the ability to create and foster a healthy work environment, build relationships, display respectful communication, and encourage collaboration among employees. By providing positive reinforcement, constructive criticism, and engaging in problem solving solutions, a manager can promote a healthy environment and ensure employee retention.

Leadership and management although very different, must coexist to effectively and efficiently run a successful business. An individual that can be both a leader and a manager is an attribute and commodity for any organization. Most individuals are either one or the other. Both positions are necessary roles and hold a high degree of value.
