MANAGING THE GLOBAL WORKFORCE

Ethics Paper

Events

On April 20, 2010 the Gulf oil spill in Mexico bay was largest accidental release of oil spill into ocean. “On July 15, 2010, an estimated 3.19 million barrels of oil had leaked into the Gulf.”(Terese Collions 2015) This accident killed 11 people and many of animals include sea turtles, dolphins and sea birds. Until three months later on July 15, 2010 totally leaked about 4.9 million barrels oil. (Terese Collions 2015)

The BP company ‘British Petroleum’ was a public limited company and it was one of the word’s seven “supermajor” oil and gas company. (The New York Times 2014)The Deepwater Horizon oil spill has very serious effect on Mexico Bay and continuing financial with Louisiana and Mississippi and Florida states, also break the legal and public relations burden. BP had expended $28 billion for this oil spill accident by September 2014. The New York Times reported “casts a cloud over BP’s future.”

Effects on Human

This oil spill had very strong economic impacts on the Unite State economy like fishing and tourism. Basis on a report from NOAA, the gulf fisheries can be recovering at 2011. But until 2013 the fishermen from Mississippi said that fish, crab, oyster and shrimp was not yet recovered from this accident.(U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration 2014) As we all know the oil spill in ocean can cause long-term effective for people health and ocean security. At same time this accident killed 11 people, on the other hand, this spill effects local people who lived in around the Gulf of Mexico. Australia’s “60 Minutes” reported that people living along the gulf coast were becoming sick from the mixture of corexit and oil. (Crude Solution)

When “Deepwater Horizon” was exploded and oil started spill in the ocean, BP started emergency preparedness try to make whole spill get control. But it didn’t effectivity, everyday more and more oil spill out of pipeline. In conclusion, even if this remedial measures are work, this gulf becoming dangerous and unsafe. The pollution of ocean can’t be rescue immediately. This is not simple problem and people should suffer from this pollution.

For this accident I believe that BP company and U.S. government should responsible for it. The reason of this oil spill and “Deepwater Horizon” exploded is BP employee not follow the operating steps and company ignore production safety, at same time the U.S. government absence of supervision.

Basis on this event BP company lose their employees and equipment control. Which means the company always focus on the benefits and money, but only have sound mechanism and feedback mechanism can keep company continuous improvement. As an oil company they should protect employees’ personal safety and keep watching it. If management ignore this, it will be triggering a chain reaction. The safety company culture will be destroyed. In fact the U.S. government should pay attention to this situation. Establishment perfect external surveillance system should be necessary.
