MGMT 605 Ethics Analysis/ MBA identifying ethical issues

Each student will be required to find a leadership situation Lincoln faced, and analyze it from an ethical perspective.

The leadership situation that Lincoln faced was being led by his followers and acknowledging their effort. From an ethical perspective this situation can be viewed as a utilitarianism principle. The utilitarianism principle is defined as “seeking the greatest good for the greatest number of people”. Lincoln acknowledge his followers who came up with great ideas while also monitoring their progress. This was a way to show people there is more than one person help create decisions and solutions to the problems. He made sure the followers were making the right choices for the greatest number of people who are in those situations daily. Situations like army, being poor, middle class, taxes, and etc.

Students should combine the material from class and their own research to justify their positions. There are four ethical perspectives described in the slide presentation, but you may be most interested in the ethical principles of utilitarianism or individual right

· What moral or ethical problems or dilemmas exist in this situation

The ethical problems that would exist in this situation would be telling everyone that he did it alone and no one help. In addition, not acknowledging others and putting the blame on others if they failed. Lincoln the leader being led by his followers have to make sure that his follower know they will be rewarded for the good choices they make and they will not be accounted for their bad decisions they make. If he does otherwise then he would be considered unethical.

· From what other perspectives might an individual look at this situation?

Other perspectives of individuals might look at Lincoln being self-centered because they are helping him and he is not giving no one any credit for their work.

· What is/was the role of the leader in the situation?

In this role everyone is a leader. It is for the greatest number of people. It is not about who does it best it is about who makes the right decisions for everyone and acknowledging their effort when they do correct decisions. “Lead by being led” exemplifies Lincoln leading and also others leading him to have options for the United States.

· What moral obligations did the leader have? To whom?

The moral obligations Lincoln have is being ethical to the people who are making the decisions that positively effect the country and to himself. Also, being honest that he cannot do everything alone.

· What standards and norms underlie the ethical situation?

The standard that underlie this ethical situation is to be able to give others credit when they accomplished something you have not. Sometimes the norm could be that one person take the credit but that would be unethical and others would not work with that person in any future engagements.

· What consequences might arise from this situation? For whom?

The consequences will probably result in Lincoln being alone in making decisions without any help. People would see him as arrogant and would feel less because their work is not being acknowledge. When people feel that their work is not being acknowledge they tend to speak less and
