A lot of schools across the nation are now applying a rule called the "NO Pass NO Play Rule". This rule came about a few years back and has done wonders for students and the school. Students who do poorly in their academic courses should not be allowed to participate in extracurricular activities; this rule is used especially in sports. After school activities takes time away from a student's studies, and should be a privilege to be able to participate in.

A student may excel in sports and devote all their time into that certain sport or many other sports. The student athletes need to understand that they will not be able to support themselves through athletic pursuits for their whole life. Most athletic pursuits have a young retirement age in the Professional leagues, so they may need to rely on their brains later in life. An athlete is prone to get some type of injury in their athletic career and should always have a backup plan to fall on. Obviously, some sports are more dangerous than others. For example, contact sports such as football result in a higher number of injuries than non-contact sports like swimming. However, all types of sports have a potential for injury, whether from the trauma of contact with other players or from overuse or misuse of a body part. Statistics show that about 3.5 million student athletes (ages 14 and up) get hurt each year playing sports or participating in recreational activities. Athletes that fail should not be allowed to play sports because it weakens a student's dependence on their intellectual ability and forces them to depend on their athletic ability alone to obtain a college or higher education degree. Also if a student wants to go for a scholarship based on their athletic ability a lot of colleges now will look at their grades and test scores.

After school activities takes time away from a student's studies. A student that is failing a great amount of their classes should be getting tutoring help from another classmate or from the teacher, not going to after school activities. The biggest reason that extracurricular activities interfere with study habits is that they leave you with no extra time for studying. When extracurricular activities are taken on, they require a great deal of after school time, in some more than three or four hours a day. When others focus on the performance of a particular activity more than class work, it leaves students believing that class work isn't worth it. Getting an education should be a student's number one priority and then they should worry about the extracurricular activities. For example, a student may be an amazing artist and is in the art club but if art is the only class they have an "A" in then that's a problem. This student is making art their number one priority over their school work. It is very hard to become known in the art industry and a lot of artist art work becomes famous and well known
