Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet is a famous Shakespeare's play. It is well known by its complex characters, excellent language use and tragic story. It still influences the people all around the world. In the play, the main character is Romeo and Juliet, while there are also some other important characters such as the parents of these two characters, which has great power and try to control their lives and prince, who make the decision to banish Romeo. There are also two small characters, Nurse and Friar. They are small because they don't have much power, but they are very important. This essay will discuss why these two characters are important and why the play is still popular today.

The main group of people in this play is the noble people. They are in the upper class in the society. They don't work, instead they held parties. Juliet was asked to marry Paris, who is also a noble people. At that time, the marriage is not a result of love. It is more like a deal, as arranged marriages enabled families to elevate or maintain social status, acquire wealth and property, or gain a political advantage. This is why Juliet's father want her to marry Paris. Juliet, however, has fallen in love with Romeo and ask Nurse for help. Nurse had a daughter but she died, then she was asked to look after Juliet since she was a baby. So Juliet treat Nurse as her mother as she raise her up. When she fall in love with Romeo, she asked Nurse to help her. Also whenever she has got a problem, she goes to the Nurse. But Nurse betrayed Juliet as she agreed to let her marry Paris and Juliet was very angry and disappointed. This indirectly leads to her death as it hurts Juliet when she is going through a tough time and made her unstable.

Another important character is Friar Laurence. He is a religious person, and also a close friend of Romeo and a man he can trust. Same as the Nurse, he helps Romeo and gives him advices. Again, he is important for the play development. He hold the secret marriage of Romeo and Juliet, as he thought this can stop the fight between the two families. After his effort failed, he came up with another plan, which is a good one in the first place, but turns out to be a tragedy. So he indirectly causes Romeo and Juliets' death. Also what he has done also shows that he is capable of sin and dishonesty.

Though the setting of this play is in the 16th century, it is still welcomed by the world. The reason is that although the setting is old, the story is well-related to our lives. There are couples that are not accepted by each other's parents, but they fight for their right to stay together and this is what this play shows. Of course young people now aren't likely to suicide like Romeo and Juliet, but they still fight, in different ways. The play encourage couples to fight for their right and get rid of the troubles.
