The book Noah Webster, A Man Who Loved Words was written by Elaine

Cunningham. It is a biography about Noah Webster. The events take place mostly in

Connecticut. This book is 147 pages long.

Noah Webster was born on October 16, 1758. His family lived in West Hartford,

Connecticut. His father was a farmer and a weaver. His mother was a homemaker.

Noah had two brothers and two sisters. Noah's brothers, Charles and Abraham, helped

their father with the farm work. His sisters, Mercy and Jerusha, helped their mother with

cooking and household chores for the family.

Noah started school when he was five years old. Noah was very excited on the

first day of school. He wanted to learn about everything. He was hoping to learn how to

read on the first day, but they did not and this made him upset. He practiced reading at

home. He loved reading the Bible.

Many kids went to school until they were 10 or 11 years old. After that, they

stayed at home to work on the farm. Because Noah loved to read, he continued going to

school. He liked reading books rather than playing with friends. He helped with the farm

and he stayed up late at night to catch up with his reading. His family loved God and

they went to church on Sundays.

At age thirteen, Noah asked his minister to tutor him in Latin. He also borrowed

books from the minister because his family was poor and they did not have books at

home. After just 2 years, he mastered Latin and the minister said he was ready for

college. Noah wanted to go to college but he knew it was impossible because his family

is poor. Noah's parents saved money and sacrificed a lot so that he could go to college.

Noah started attending Yale College when he was fifteen. Noah was sad to

leave his family. Noah and his father walked 35 miles to get to Yale. They were given a

tour when they arrived. Noah was excited to see the library and to learn and read all of

the books there. But he was frustrated because he found out that freshmen were not

allowed to check out any of the books. Noah's roommate was Oliver Wolcott. He also

became good friends with another classmate, Joel Barlow.
