Jobs in the future will require appropriately prepared works for the knowledge economy. what competencies and skills are most likely to prepare students for the jobs of the future?

From the perspective of employer, students who are equipped the vocational, interpersonal and generic skills could have more opportunities to hunt a decent job in the future (Rayner&Papakonstantinou,2015). What is more, with the rapidly change in the labor market, according Andrews (2015), the unknown world raises plenty of unpredictable occupations, which means that job applicants need more skills to enhance their competitive advantage. However, it is needs to recognize the fact that theoretical knowledge is not the only determinant of success. Pompa (2015) argues that employers would pay more attention to individual ability instead of academic performance.

Generic skills such as critical-thinking and problem-solving competencies that students can gain from extracurricular activities and internship experience. In order to stand out in the future workplace, those people who grasp the critically analyze skills are likely to utilize big data and other technology program more effectively (Rayner&Papakonstantinou,2015; Andrews,2015). These skills could help them solve complex issues in the workplace and get deep understand of questions which include positive and negative aspects. Compared with repetitive tasks, future tasks are related to creative and innovate jobs (Pompa,2015). He also argues that many organizations hope their employees could organize and reconstruct complex data creatively.

In addition, Pompa (2015) states that employers also encourage students grasp different discipline knowledge so that engage in interdisciplinary themes work contents easily. For example, blending technical work need employees to understand the knowledge of cross disciplines, after which they are able to communicate with different professionals in the field of technology. According to Andrews (2015), in Australia, there will be a huge transition in the nearly future so the competence in workplace become fiercely. Therefore, in an “known unknown” world, job seekers should improve their interdisciplinary skills to adapt quickly in the new workplace.

However, the education from university and parents also play an important role in student growth, because it is not only the student responsibility to acquire proper knowledge. Andrews (2015) believes that these influencers could be a guide when students hunt a job. In the university, teachers are deeply understanding their student advantages and disadvantages, so they can help them to choose a suitable job and give them more opportunities to compare different work categories. What is more, parents should teach their children to understand and analyze problems earlier. In this way, their children could form habits of learning and change learning attitude effectively. Rayner& Papakonstantinou (2015) argue that an excellent worker need STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) skills, so it is career adviser duty to urge students to learn these skills before they enter the workplace.
