I am not currently employed but for the purpose of this discussion I will like to share the cultural sensitivity of a shipping company that I have worked for in the past.
About 2 years back, I worked for a shipping company called Headmasters Investment Limited (Hil). HIL is a company that ships goods and services locally and internationally. At this company, the concept of cultural diversity and sensitivity is not new and it is taking very seriously. The customers and staff are culturally and diverse with a mixture of people of different age, class, gender, and religious groups. During the period that I was employed, I had frequent contacts with customers when they bring goods to ship to a different state or city. Occasionally, I meet with customers that want to ship goods to their relative abroad and I am required to ensure smooth transition to the appropriate department or staff that handles such.
My job with the company was on performance base, meaning that I get paid based the number of customers that I can process and retain. I have to be professional and culturally sensitive to work in these work settings, I value multicultural differences and treat all customers and staff with dignity, irrespective of my personal biases. I often take advantage of the company's yearly training on diversity to brushing up my skills and improve my competencies.
Headmaster investment Limited promotes a "safe" place for staff to communicate such as social gatherings and business meetings, where every staff listen and have chance to be heard, I actively participate in such gathering especially the informal meetings. The company also has an open door policy whereby an employee can work up to the member of the administration to clarity misunderstanding before they gets out of hand.
