The advance in modern language has made it possible to have the greatest literary masterpieces available for the world to read. The masterpieces play an important factor in the intellectual life of our time. The role of books in a person's life makes understanding canonical literature all the more important to our culture. A reader knows a masterpiece when it is read, because the reader will always remember the story.

"Beowulf" us a good example of Old English poetry. J.R.R. Tolkien worked to get "Beowulf" on the required reading list at Oxford University. In the university classroom, "Beowulf" is still the first poem most students encounter (Bowers, 2011). The "Odyssey" showed the Greek hero as a crafty warrior Odysseus. Virgil's "Aeneid" details the beginning of the Roman Empire.

A masterpiece has several factors which influence the evolution of a literary masterpiece. All masterpieces share some similar qualities. Style, technique, balance and harmony are seen in all masterpieces. Another element that is seen in all masterpieces is motive. The author has to spend many hours writing a novel. The energy or time the author spends working on a piece can play a part in the novel becoming a masterpiece. The story must be rare and not seen in the literary world before this story. The quality of the emotional power of the literature and the skill the author incorporates into working on the literary piece shows in how people accept the novel. The author must be sure the piece was written about a certain time period and understand the importance of the time. A great literary novel moves the reader and gives the feeling and the imagination beyond the ordinary life. It is very important the author knows the history of the piece. If the history is incorrect it can affect the chances of the novel becoming masterpiece. The subject matter has to be a window to the past. The novel has to accepted by critics, the public and his contemporaries. A great novel can be read over and over and each reading will show new insights. A great novel is timeless

and timely. It is enjoyed by all who read it. A literary masterpiece deals with emotions, truths, and the world.

A masterpiece is included in the literary canon, which means the canon of books are the most important and influenced the shape of the Western culture. The literary canon's approach to the masterpieces of Western literature focuses on the unique connections between each work and its predecessors (Bowers, 2011). The masterpieces included in the literary canon were not created in a vacuum, but they were shaped by the literary traditions that came before them. The literary canon shows the importance of the cultural milestones and shows their timeless legacies (Bowers, 2011).
