Free Speech

What is free speech? One word that comes to mind is freedom, freedom is act to think as one and do as one with no restrictions from others. The United States of America is all about granting their citizens with freedom of speech. The Constitution of the United States was written in 1787 and put into effect in 1789. Freedom of speech is knowledge that everyone should have information about and the ability to pass it on. In this paper, a clear definition of free speech as well as compare and contrast artistic and political different types of legally protected speech.

The very first amendment was put into place in 1791 as a part of the Bill of Rights. According to "What Does Free Speech Mean?" (2013), "among other cherished values, the First Amendment protects freedom of speech. The U.S. Supreme Court often has struggled to determine what exactly constitutes protected speech. The following are examples of speech, both direct words and symbolic actions, that the Court has decided are either entitled to First Amendment protections, or not. The First Amendment states, in relevant part, that: "Congress shall make no law...abridging freedom of speech" (para. 1). Today, social media sites like twitter display how individuals reflect and use free speech daily. For example, groups and individuals can grow a network of people showing how they utilize freedom of speech. In countless ways the Internet is radically enhancing our access to information and empowering us to share ideas and connect with the entire world. Speech thrives online freed of limitations inherent in traditional print or broadcast media that are created by corporate gatekeepers ("Free Speech", 2013).

There are so many different reasons to rely on the United States Government, one reason to rely and follow the rules of the government, because they create rules and laws to protect the American people. The protected speech means speech that is protected from government regulation and censorship, like political and artistic depending upon the nature of the speech and the nature of regulation.

In concluding this paper, free of speech is very important topics that always need to be talked about. As stated, one word that comes to mind is freedom, freedom is act to think as one and do as one with no restrictions from others and adds speech and it is freedom of speech.
