How to negotiate with women

When you have a negotiation from a different nation it is very important to get to know it, but you also have to do it in case you have a negotiation with a female, even if you are one. Women are called the “weaker sex”, so it means that they have a hard time at their workplace, they have to fight more for their rights, and they do it as well. We all know that women are sensitive and caring, but how do they handle a negotiation strategy and how do they fight for higher salary?

Firstly, women try to avoid negotiation strategies, and one on their biggest mistake is that they often do not prepare well for these situations. Still, the biggest problem is that they have low expectations which results in low outcomes, that is why men are considered to be better negotiators (Slavina, 2018). But, in case women has to represent someone else or even a company, they are said to be in a much better position (Slavina, 2018).  That is why, they should feel like they are an agent of an organization they are working for, so they will be able to fight for their goals easier. In this case women narrow the gender gap in the outcomes and they are able to point out the needs of the organisation during the negotiation (Shonk, 2017).

As women spend more and more time negotiating, they get used to it and turn into professionals, so that the gap between the outcomes of women and man is narrowed because of their experiences (Shonk, 2017). So, women need time and experience and training to gain more confidence and to be more successful in this field. If they are well prepared and maybe they know also the upper and lower limits of a negotiation, they may change their behaviour for the better (Shonk, 2017).

Women do not like negotiating for themselves, this means that they do not like negotiating for higher salary. It can be because of the fact that they feel uncomfortable, about 68% of the women do not negotiate for pay rise (Doyle, 2018). As you are climbing up the career ladder it is becoming harder and harder to get a pay rise because of your gender. Women can hardly get higher salaries than man as their starting salaries are different and will be different after pay rises too, as it still remains much lower (Doyle, 2018). When you get an offer, take your time to consider whether you say yes or not, you should take a look at the internet and ask your colleagues as well. Before you, a woman, ask for a pay rise you have to know how much you want to earn, also that it is acceptable to ask, be positive, and be well prepared and tell your boss why you deserve the rise (Doyle, 2018).
