Katniss is a 16 year old girl. She lives in the poor gloomy poverty stricken

District 12. Her father died when she was younger in one of the

mines. District 12 is very well known for their coal mining. Her

mother did not live in district 12 at first, but fell in love with

katniss's father and moved there. Ever since his death she has been

mourning and not really supporting her children. She makes herbs and

sells them but it does not profit the family. Katniss has the weight

of her family on her shoulders, she would do anything for them. At

food and other luxuries for the remaining year. The Hunger Games are

a way of keeping the residents of the Districts in check. People

live in fear of their children being chosen. At the age of 12 you

get your name put in once into the lottery. Every consecutive year

you get your name put in an extra time. They also have a thing

available that if you want to you can put your name in another time

for every family member so you receive food. Katniss has been doing

this since the age of 12, and so has her friend Gale. However, she

refuses to let Prim do this. On the day of the Hunger Games everyone
