Working in just about any company today is influenced by networking and communication technology. All computer systems are linked using better and better networking developments affecting speed and security. I have seen the improvements and vast amounts of communication technology when I was a student at Pittsburgh Filmmakers and later at CSB, school of broadcasting. The constant improvement of technology is always evolving which makes the digital film world a growing industry. I saw the technology evolve when I worked at a movie theatre. The projectors were changing from large film canisters to digital hard drives that improved the picture and sound with a smaller package.
What goals or expectations do you have for this class? Do you foresee being involved in networking technology at some point in your career?
I hope to increase my knowledge of networking with a better understanding of why certain processes are done and why. Networking and telecommunications have exploded with the increase in computer technology for phones and other digital devices. The music and film industry has gone completely digital and requires a background in networking to understand the technology and be a part of these industries. Many occupations require the use of networking and telecommunications as a daily usage. There is always a need to gain knowledge in technology past and present. I would like to get into an occupation involving studio work or filmmaking, so I would benefit with any knowledge of networking and telecommunication.
Week 1 :: DQ2
Discuss the various standards organizations utilized in the networking industry. Discuss any advantages or drawbacks to standards and standards development organizations. Do any of these organizations have conflicting charters or have they always worked in different areas to form a coordinated industry overview?
There are an unlimited number of networking standards that can be applied to an organization. The best standards for an organization really depend on what their requirements and security needs are. Networking standards can be either open or proprietary and even these are broken down into many sub standards. Proprietary standards are owned by the organization or individual. This decision would impact the type of standard networking is utilized by the company. Protocol standards such as OSI or TCP/IP, wireless or wired transmission are also a factor in the utilized networking for an organization.
The different standards have influenced the way organizations are set up to network. Some protocols and LAN systems are not compatible and will cause problems in data transfer or communications. Older system designs rely on the networking technology of the time and are sometimes unable to use newer networking technology.
