New England and Chesapeake Case

By 1700, both the Chesapeake and New England Colonies, though both settled by English people, were both very different. New England and Chesapeake were the first two settlements in America. Not only were both Chesapeake and New England different settlements, they were all around different societies. The way people lived in these settlements were nothing alike.

Social life is a very big part of these settlements. In New England, there were more families, more women, longer life, few diseases and no slaves. In Chesapeake the life expectancy was shorter, there were many more males, there were indentured servants, and power rested with single females in a widowarchy. (Doc B.) In this document, it shows there are more families and there were more women, 70 year's expected and fewer diseases. In New England there was also a male based society. These emigrants were most likely going to the New England settlements because of the low mortality, and less diseases. (Doc C.) In this document it shows that there are many more males than females bound for Virginia in the Chesapeake settlement. (Doc H) In the Chesapeake settlement Bacon's Rebellion of 1676 ended the use of indentured servants. (Doc F) "When the large ship departed..." Those who had money and spear clothes were ever welcome to purchase supplies. The rest patiently obeyed vile commander.

The two main religious groups were Separatists and Puritans. Calvinism, also know as predestination, says that good works cannot save you, and no one knows their spiritual status. The puritan rebel, Roger Williams, argued full break from the Anglican Church, the Church of England, condemned MA Bay charter. All Puritan Rebels would be dumped in Rode Island also know as the sewer. (Doc A) John Winthrop was the manor Lord in England and became the first governor of MA. The Separatists believed in their whole society. In 1620, The Mayflower shipped a group of 102 people, half Separatists, to Virginia.

In the end both the Chesapeake Region and the New England region were both settled and developed. The Puritans had their part, and so did the Separatists. From then until now the colonies have been busy changing. Both started off slow but began to pick up after.
