Only Women Bleed is a song written by Alice Cooper and Dick Wagner. The song evokes a sympathetic tone towards females. When Alice cooper sings this song he portrays a hint of resentment towards men and how they treat women. Also, when he says "And you there down on your knees begging me please come watch me bleed" there is a hint of frustration in his voice and it's directed towards women who end up going back to the abusive lifestyle they worked so hard to get out of. The literal meaning of "only women bleed" is that of the difficult process women have to go through every month, their period. The figurative meaning is that women are usually the ones that end up being the victim in an abusive relationship and they are the ones that bleed first. The diction used in the lyrics shows that the woman is in distress and does not know what to do. She takes care of him and cooks and cleans and he still gives her the gray hairs on her head. To the guy it is only a game and she does not want to play this game (Man makes your hair gray...You know you hate this game he slaps you once in a while and you live and love in pain...)
Only Women Bleed is a song that emphasizes the abusive relationship women are in and how they are treated. It portrays women as victims of the neglect men put them in and even though women love and care for their men they still end up being hurt. This song is about women who love men who abuse them ...and still let it happen. In the 1970s (when this son was written) it was common for women to get abused by their husbands.
There are many literary devices used in the song Only Women Bleed. Allegory is used a lot throughout the lyrics. Cooper does not specifically say whether the man is abusive but as the reader reads between the lines then he can get the broader picture of what is said. Another term is a flashback. Some believe that Alice Cooper wrote this song because during his childhood his father was abusive towards his mother. Foreshadowing is also something that is used in the song. At the beginning Cooper sets the stage by saying what women do for men and later on how men pay they back. The lyrics also, have a rhyme scheme which is A, B, A, C, C.
When I first heard this song I immediately thought it was about women and how they don't get respect for the things they do, but as I started paying more attention to the diction and sentence structure I realized that it was more than that. This song made me have more respect for women and what some of them have to go through in order to survive and I believe that it is very important to acknowledge the sacrifices women make for their loved ones.
