Introduction:

XXX is an engineering company, provides turnkey solutions for companies engaged in power, minerals, coal, open cast mining, aluminum, port and shipyard cranes, civic and industrial water supply, and steel industries. In addition, it manufactures conveyor and components, crushers, grinding mills, cranes, and ash handling equipment and components. XXX manufactures a wide range of products required for its various projects through its subsidiary company YYY. XXX also through its subsidiary XXX Mineral Technology Pvt. Ltd acquired the Coal & Mineral Technology division of KHD Humboldt Wedag, a global leader in coal and mineral processing. XXX holds four manufacturing facilities and XXX is certified with ISO 9001:2000 certification. XXX is headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.

Over last 40 years 60-65% of Indian power plant projects have been successfully executed and implemented by XXX, has manifested a huge brand value in the industry segment, which undoubtedly provided a huge competitive advantage w.r.t. its prime competitors. For the last 40 years XXX was holding the industrial monopoly with its highly valued customer solution and extremely enriched core competencies.

In 2008, during the great recession the Engineering & Manufacturing industry was affected most badly. XXX as the market leader suffered the pain too and still surviving to overcome the damage and regain its initial position &momentum in the industry.

Strategy taken by the organization:

XXX management has understood the opportunities evolving and analyzed the threats and appointed Mr. Sujoy Banerjee as VP HR, who is a known OD practitioner in the industry. After Mr. Banerjee takes over his duty, the following HR interventions are being implemented in the organization till date.

Team Building Intervention:

Team-building exercises consist of a variety of tasks designed to develop group members and their ability to work together effectively. There are many types of team building activities that range from games for kids to games and challenges that involve novel and complex tasks that are designed for improving group performance by addressing specific needs.

Whether indoor or outdoor, the purpose of team building exercises is to assist teams in becoming cohesive units of individuals that can effectively work together to complete tasks.

Reasons for team building include

* Improving communication and relationships among different projects of XXX.

* Making the workplace more enjoyable, and build a unique culture called XXX culture.

* Motivating a team through Monetary & non-monetary reinforcements.

* Boosting morale mainly through recognition & non-monetary reinforcements.

* Getting to know each other to increase the synergy.

* Getting everyone "onto the same page", including goal setting so that people goal can be aligned to the organizational goal.

* Teaching the team self-regulation strategies

* Helping participants to learn more about themselves (strengths and weaknesses) through rigorous training programs.

* Identifying and utilizing the strengths of team members

* Improving team productivity

* Identifying and developing leadership skills through succession planning.

* Practicing effective collaboration with team members to increase collectivism and harmony.

Types of Team Building exercises in XXX:

Communication exercise

Communications exercises are problem solving activities that are geared towards improving communication skills. The issues teams encounter in these exercises are solved by communicating effectively with each other.

Goal: Create an activity which highlights the importance of good communication in team performance and/or potential problems with communication.

Problem-solving/decision-making exercise

Problem-solving/decision-making exercises focus specifically on groups working together to solve difficult problems or make complex decisions. These exercises are some of the most common as they appear to have the most direct link to what employers want their teams to be able to do.

Goal: Give team a problem in which the solution is not easily apparent or requires the team to come up with a creative solution

Planning/adaptability exercise

These exercises focus on aspects of planning and being adaptable to change. These are important things for teams to be able to do when they are assigned complex tasks or decisions.

Goal: Show the importance of planning before implementing a solution

Trust exercise

A trust exercise involves engaging team members in a way that will induce trust between them. They are sometimes difficult exercises to implement as there are varying degrees of trust between individuals and varying degrees of individual comfort trusting others in general.

Goal: Create trust between team members

Evaluation:

Teamwork is critical to the success of the organization's business; in some cases, it determines survival too. Existence of High performing teams is the benefits of team building initiatives. They consistently perform better than their competitors & provide the organization huge competitive advantage, exactly what was required in XXX.

Structural Intervention:

Structural interventions includes changes in how the overall work of an organisation is divided into units, who reports to whom, methods of control, the arrangement of equipment and people, work flow arrangements and changes in communications and authority.

This type of intervention helps change the structure of an organization to make the work more interesting, challenging or productive. It involves such activities as job enrichment, job enlargement, formation of autonomous work teams or business re -engineering. XXX is now restructuring its reporting hierarchy and span of control
