Reading Report of Emma

Emma--the fourth, longest and last of Jane Austen’s books. Emma is considered a classic romantic comedy and was first published in 1816. This book adds dimension and depth to the story which focuses on 19th century social hierarchies and the interaction between various social classes.

Emma is not only a beautiful, intelligent and wealthy girl, but also a fantast.  Emma believes she is a skilled matchmaker and repeatedly attempts to pair up her friends and acquaintances. Nothing delights her more than meddling in the love lives of others. But when she takes protege Harriet Smith under her wing, her interference has a detrimental effect.

Emma is a young lady who loves romantic love story, but she does not believe she will falls in with anybody. Mr. Knightly is a truly gentleman with excellent quality, exceptional insight and calm mind , he always gives Emma objective evaluation and fair exhortation when people compliment her. Maybe he is the only one who can points out Emma's shortcomings. Although Emma often argues with Mr. Knightly, Mr. Knightly is always on her side and gives her lots of advice. I think that is the way Mr.Knightly loves Emma, however, Emma did not realize it. Fortunately, it is not too late when Emma realized she loves Mr.Knightly.

The way Emma matchmaker for people is funny. Emma always matches a man of high social status to a humble women, but she never succeed. The author reveals the truth that people attach great importance to social status but ignore true love between each other in that time. Jane Austen thoughts that women also have right to choose the men they love.

This story also tells us another truth. After making a lot of mistakes, Emma abandoned imagination, and become more and more mature. And we should not be arrogant. If we make a mistake, we should correct it on time.
