Essay Preview: Resiliency - the Ability to Successfully Cope with a Crisis and to Return to Pre-Crisis Status Quickly
Resiliency which is a course concept under awareness is the ability to successfully cope with a crisis and to return to pre-crisis status quickly. In my personal life, this has taught my how to survive vs. thrive. Surviving being the ability to manage life stressors and continue to do well in face of adversity and thriving being the ability to do what matter most so we get most out of life. In my professional and academic life, it has taught me to persist in the face of setbacks whether that be a lower than expected mark or a professional setback.
From a team perspective, the importance of valuing diversity in teams has really influenced my life. Diversity can be an asset as there is value in different perspectives. In commerce the majority of work is team based and I have learned to take the important steps of seeing differences, understanding differences, and valuing differences in an academic as well as a professional setting. In my personal life, the concept has taught me to simply be more receptive to differing opinions leading to a greater social awareness.
The most interesting concept from this course in my opinion was the illusion of knowing which falls under learning. It is the belief that comprehension has been attained when, in fact, comprehension has failed. I have learned that in an academic sense, I may overestimate my competence leading to errors in judgement being made. Although this specific concept hasn’t directly influence my personal life, it has also benefited me in a professional sense as it allows me to be sure of whether or not I am confident in the knowledge I will be presenting to my colleagues.
Finally, with regards to the course objective of work, I learned about productivity and how to find the most effective and efficient way to do things. I believe that there isn’t anything else in life that can give you as much advantage and ability to design a life you want, so you can achieve the goals you have, so evidently, it has impacted every aspect of my life. I now strive to live a 24 hour life where I focus on the day ahead of me and how I can work towards my personal, professional, and academic goals. I have also routinely applied the “eat the frog” technique which is where I will tackle my most unappealing task first making the rest of my tasks throughout a given day that much more pleasant.
At first, I was incredibly unimpressed with the content of the course and shocked by the number of readings involved as I struggled to see the purpose of all of it. Now, oddly enough, this new knowledge under my belt has encouraged me to practise having a positive approach to the problems and adversities I face on the regular.
