The Shannon-weaver model is a general model of communication which was introduced by Claude Shannon and Warren Weaver. Claude Shannon and Warren Weaver were scientists who worked at the Bell Telephone Company in America. The model was actually developed to separate noise from information carrying signals in the field of communication technology. But later, it was applied to human communication. The model is shown below:-

1.2 Elements of the model

The Shannon-weaver model includes eight elements which are: an information source, , a message, an encoder, a signal, a channel, a decoder, a destination and a noise.

The message is the information or idea that the information source intends to communicate to the destination.

The encoder is a device that translates the message of the sender into an understandable signal or code.

The signal is a set of data and information that passes through the channel.

The channel is the route that the signal passes through to reach the destination.

The decoder is a device that is used by the receiver to translate the signal into an understandable message.

The destination is a person or group of persons that the message was intended to reach to, i.e., the ultimate goal of the message.
