Sports and Discrimination Journal # 2

Ethnicity is the breakdown of a person. It is your background which you identity through. Never confuse race and ethnicity, they are two different things. One is more general and broader in description which goes just by my appearance, while the other is the roots of who a person really is. Now discrimination has a mind of its own. This is very different from race or ethnicity. Webster's dictionary defines discrimination as a social, economical, political or legal distinction made between individuals or groups that make one have the power to treat the others unfavorably. The media has a way of using their technology to express them with discrimination also. To bring about change of attitudes, the media has a vital role in helping to prevent discrimination in sports. Sports have always been an arena for criticism, hatred and discrimination of certain groups or individuals. It is shown that there is a high level of competition between African Americans and other races. There is a lot of Speculation as to why this is. Journal of Woman Minorities in Sciences & Engineering. 9. 28 Hanson, S., & Kraus, R. (2003). Not only in the school atmosphere, but also as a career women are discouraged to entering the field of athletics because the salary for female's entering athletic careers is very low. It has been researched that only five percent of televised sports contain women's events. Some people believe because women play more fundamentally sound, it is boring. Discrimination, racism and stereotypes will always exist in sports. There is too much influence making it hard for justice to prevail. Sports are mainly a reflection of society; the acceptance of minorities in sports will slowly take place, as acceptance of minorities occurs in society. Sports are meant to be for everyone to enjoy, not just a particular gender. As part of the Education Amendments of 1972, Title lX states that, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." This act has been one the most controversial and most scrutinized amendments to be passed in years and it has never been re-evaluated. It has done a lot during its years by increasing women's sports at all levels and even decreasing men's sports
