The Attractive Color Red

For years the color red has been known as one of the most attractive and appealing colors to humans. It is widely used as an advertising strategy and on alert/warning signs. Recent studies show that it can also be used as one more thing, to attract men. Psychology professor Andrew Elliot and post-doctoral researcher Daniela Niesta conducted psychological experiments in which the color red makes men feel more attracted and amorous toward woman when woman wear it. Although this is now a fact, men are still unaware of the role the color red plays in their life.

Andrew Elliot and Daniela Niesta conducted a series of experiments where men were shown photographs of woman with different color borders. The men being tested were asked questions like how pretty they thought the woman in the photograph was. Other studies were conducted where the shirt of the woman in the photograph was digitally enhanced to the color red and blue. In this study the men were asked such questions as what their long-term intensions would be with the woman in the photograph with regards to dating them. After the different sets of questions were asked, the woman wearing the color red and the photo that had a red frame were rated as being more attractive and more sexually desirable than the photographs of the exact same woman shown with different colors.

Woman did not find a difference in the same photographs that were shown to the men that were being tested. They did not find the woman to be anymore attractive than the same woman shown in different colors. The color red does not extend to the opinions that men might have of the woman in the photograph in terms of likability and persona. Although the color red brings a positive feedback to men, it also depends on the way the color red is being used. No all men can end up having the same conclusion about a woman that wears the color red, but as this experiment shows, most men would agree upon the idea that red is more appealing to them.

I can agree with the men that were tested on the fact that red is more appealing to me as well. The color red is one that I have always thought to be a very sexual color. Inclusively, I find it to be very attractive when woman wear red lipstick. Even though red is not a color of which I am a big fan of, it is widely used as a marketing strategy in the automotive industry, fashion districts, and the entertainment industry such as music videos and motion pictures. I agree with that strategy simply because when I see a red car in a commercial it is more appealing to me than if it was a silver color or even a blue color car. If I see an artist like for example Gwen Stefani singing in a music video with red lipstick on, the video becomes more interesting to me and that auto company and that artist are the ones who end up gaining popularity and profit.
