The Case for and against Drug Testing

The question has been asked if Castulon Corporation should establish a drug-testing program and my answer is yes, they should. Every company should have a drug testing program in place, because there is individuals that will abuse the system no matter what the cost. Castulon should implement a program that will allow individuals to have 4 steps before being terminated for drug use. In order for someone to be give a drug test the following must take place, if for some reason or another management suspect that someone is using drugs on the job, they should contact human resources and then they should do a random drug test. If no one has anything to hide then a drug test will not be a problem.

I truly understand the privacy act and the privacy of individuals but when you are on the job, I think that there is a limit to the privacy act if it can cause harm to other individuals around you. Castulon Corporation should use the following four step program for individuals who test positive for drugs on a random drug test. The first step should be a warning and the individual should be placed on a thirty day probation period. If the individual test negative at during the thirty day period then at the end they will be removed from the probationary period. If during the thirty day period an individual is tested and the results are positive then step two will come into play. During step two the individual will be placed on a ninety day probationary period and will be required to take a drug test every two weeks and if the test comes back positive within the first forty five days, then the individual will have to take a test each week instead of every two weeks. I understand that the test may be costly, but a company should rather spend $80 for a drug test instead of being sued by another employee's family for them being injured or accidently killed on the job because of a person under the influence of drugs. If an employee continues on doing the step two phase and continues to test positive then the next step is three. During step three an employee must check themselves into a drug rehab program and must stay clean during the time there and once they are released they must submit to random test for the first sixty days that they return to work. Once an employee returns to work and has been cleared from the rehab program, if for some odd reason that a drug test is issued within a year of release then step four will come into play. Step four is simply termination, during step four it will be explained to the employee and their representative if they chose to have one that all necessary actions have been taken to allow the employee the opportunity to keep their job and then they will receive whatever sick pay, vacation pay or any other monies due to them at the time of their termination meeting.
