The Cupcake Miracle

It was the beginning of the new millennium and Martha wanted a fresh start. She didn't like the dull, callow lifestyle she had been living after graduating from culinary arts school. She figured she would have a job by now, but there just weren't a lot of people looking for chefs in her small town of Spring, Texas. One day, Martha was walking down the street window shopping when she found an empty building on the corner. She could not resist her curiosity and quickly looked around before infringing inside the vacant building. Inside there was a small western-decorated kitchen and a few tables and chairs. The room smelled of dust and stale cake. Martha surmised that the building used to be a bakery and was now for lease. She smiled to her self. Martha had a great idea.

The next morning, Martha decided to tell her best friend Betsy of her master plan over coffee. "So what is the big news?" Betsy asked. "I want to start a cupcake business with you. I already found the place and I am meeting with the owner tomorrow," Martha said with aplomb. "Are you out of your mind? I can't stand to hear you drivel over this insane idea. How did you even find this place? It could be rat infested for all you know," Betsy inveighed. "I was window shopping and found a vacant building and decided to check it out. It seemed like a truly intrinsic interest," Martha argued. "Listen to yourself! You sound completely bombastic. You decide to just barge right into a vacant building. You are such an interloper. You think this cupcake business can ameliorate your unemployment? You are the epitome of a pathetic person," Betsy said trying her hardest to exhort Martha to forget her plans. Martha left the café discouraged. Her ex officio co-baker was uninterested in her plans. This was her only shot at making a dramatic change in her life. She decided to cancel her meeting with the owner of the bakery. Martha had given up. There was no use in ingratiating herself to get her friend to help her. It would take a miracle or the occult to try and convince her friend to help her run the business. Her argument with Betsy had caused Martha to be overwhelmed with lassitude and decided to head to bed. The next morning, the doorbell rang. Martha looked out the peep hole, but saw no one. She thought it was rather odd, but turned around to head back to bed. Suddenly, the doorbell rang again. Martha ran over the door and looked out the peep hole once more. There was no one there. Martha opened the door to find a small envelope that read: OPEN NOW in red letters. The stringent command compelled Martha to open the envelope, but she thought it might be best to check the driveway for the person that left the letter.
