Introduction

Among all the mental problems eating problems has the highest mortality rates. Eating disorders, has been on the rise in the recent years. This has mainly been promoted by the high regard to which physical appearance of an individual has been placed. Bulimia nervosa, Anorexia nervosa and binge eating disorder are the widest spread eating disorders. The disorder is characterized with extreme emotional distress accompanied with abnormal behaviors and attitudes towards weight and food.

Opening statement

Person centered therapy is a form of treatment where the patient or client is required to talk about their problems and in this way be able to identify the damages being caused on to them by the negative perceptions. As aforementioned, eating disorders impact negatively on a person’s overall health. Therefore identifying or investigating the viability of this solution will help the medical fraternity in establishing the effectiveness it has in the treatment of mental disorders.

Background of the study

There has been little research done in this particular area since it was identified. The main determinant being the casual way in which the stakeholders in the field have taken it. The society on the other hand do not understand the relationship between their mental health and their eating habits.

“Eating disorders has the highest mortality rates as compared to all the other mental ailments.” This fact alone should make the stakeholders in this field to reformulate their policies and ensure that they have channeled enough resources in combating this ailment. Obesity for instance is on the rise in the world partly due to living standards and the mental ailments of such individuals.

Anorexia is an ailment which comes about by when an individual due to mental problems concerning their physical outlook, avoid eating food thereby depriving their bodies of the much needed nutrients. The main societal driving force behind this is normally the depiction of an ideal woman being of a small size. The lady in this case for instance in their feeling of inadequacy and bid to meet the society’s ideal image deny themselves food. The mortality rates for Anorexia nervosa is around 4% indicating the gravity it has in today’s society (Adan & Kaye 2011).

Bulimia nervosa is another form of eating disorder where the individual forces himself or herself to vomit what he had taken. As a result, the body will be deprived of nutrients. Like Anorexia, individuals usually are aiming to attain the ideal body size. In the end they end up harming their bodies due to attempting to follow the societies perceived right way of doing things. Its mortality rate ranges at around 3.5%.

Person centered therapy is a potential remedy in the effort of dealing with mental ailments. It has therefore been proposed widely by medical practitioners as the most appropriate way of dealing mental related ailments which includes the eating disorders.
