“Will GM’s Strategic Plan Lead to Future Success?”

The world is constantly changing from day to day. One day a business could be open and the next day the doors could be closed. General Motors went through these changes years ago and now they’re trying to find ways to avoid closing their doors yet again. In order for General Motors to stay in business they know there is changes and some sacrifices that will have to be made in order to stay afloat.

Out of the four basic strategies I think General Motors used both the reactor and prospector types. Even though reactor and prospector strategy types are opposite from each other I think General Motors used both of these. The reactor strategy is passive and basically waits until there is nothing more to do before something productive is done. Whereas the prospector strategy is aggressive and is always looking for a way to better themselves before something bad could go wrong. With General Motors being in large amounts of debt and not being able to advance without a government bailout uses the reactor approach. It seemed like General Motors waited until there was absolutely nothing else they could do before they actually confronted their problem and tried to solve it. One example of this was in 2011 when sales were jumping because of the incentives they made; however, North America was suffering a profit loss. They done this to help the company get more sales coming in and help expand their business. Another example is when they made cuts in the workforce causing plants to close down and models of vehicles to be cut also. After the government bailout General Motors used the prospector style to make excessive amounts of money again. They finally realized that there was changes that had to be made so that the company could stay open and one of those changes was confronting upper level markets in their competitive companies. It allowed them to feel more comfortable with the changes and the competitiveness that they had even though it could have come back and backfired on them.

With General Motors wanting their competitors to be worried about their comeback I think their vision is to advance above the competition. They want their customers to be satisfied on their vehicles and they are going above and beyond to make sure they improve what needs to be done. I think this vision is very realistic and can be maintained. In order for General Motors to stay open and ahead of their competitors they need to invent new ideas that are different from other competitors. They also need to plan out their goals and constantly check their progress so that they can stay ahead of everyone else.

One of the smart goal that I think is important is for General Motors to focus on one car instead of hundreds. Instead of General Motors selling hundreds of different types of vehicles they need to focus on the vehicles that they know are going to sell
