Chapter 1:

"When a young naturalist commences the study of a group of organisms quite unknown to him, he is at first perplexed to determine to consider...for he knows nothing of the amount and kind of variation to which a group is subject..."

* When an amateur naturalist begins to observe his surroundings that are of a new concept to him, the person usually starts off clueless

* In this chapter Calpurnia just starts to observe the natural world.

* She is an amateur, not knowing what to do

Chapter 2:

"The laws of governing inheritance are quite unknown; no one can say why...the child often reverts in certain characteristics to its grandfather..."

* Sometimes the child ends up with some of the same qualities as the grandfather

* In this chapter Calpurnia has some of the same traits and interests as her grandfather

* They both enjoy being naturalists and observing naturalists.

Chapter 3:

"Seedlings from the same fruit, and the young of the same litter, sometimes differ considerably from each other, though both the young and the parents...have apparently been exposed to exactly the same conditions of life..."

* Even though the parents and children live in the same environment, sometimes the parent and the child differ a lot.

* In this chapter, we realize that Calpurnia and her mother differ a lot from each other.

* Her mother is very organized and is interested in the house work while Calpurnia cares more about science.

Chapter 4:

"We may conclude...that the change in the numerical proportions of some of the inhabitants, independently of the change of climate itself, would most seriously affect many others."

* Sometimes in an environment, if one small thing changes or one person starts to slack off than it will affect all the people and the entire setting itself.

* This chapter talks about Viola, the maid. Calpurnia's house depends on Viola to cook and clean for the house.

* They are so dependent, that if she leaves than the whole house will collapse and everything will start to fall apart.
